Zimbabwean footballer Gerald Takwara will honour his merited national team call-up this month having turned his tribulations in South Africa into triumph in Saudi Arabia.

Takwara played for Ajax Cape Town during the second half of the season (2017/18) in which they were relegated from the DStv Premiership.

His seven appearances couldn’t save Ajax from the drop and off he went to the National First Division, where after failing to reach the play-offs with the club, he then moved back home.

Prior to ultimately moving back home, his services were offered to several clubs with no luck.

A year later, it was only Venda FC that snapped him up for their 2021/22 campaign.

He delivered solid performance at the back and in central midfield, but there were no takers in his services from the PSL again.

Amid trying and hoping for a return to the DStv Premiership, an opportunity arose in Saudi Arabia – the country where top footballers have been flooding to in recent times.

With vastly improved earnings to what he was getting in the NFD, Takwara has repaid the faith shown in standing out as a top performer in the Saudi First Division league playing as a central defender.

The 29-year-old has featured in 21 league games plus one in the King’s Cup for Ohod.

With that, he has been rewarded with a call-up to the Zimbabwean national team.

The Warriors squad has Divine Lunga as the only player based in South Africa, with 14 players from clubs in England, France, Turkey, Belgium and Italy.

Zimbabwe’s senior national team squad has for years been dominated by players based in South Africa until recent times.
