Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune will remain a huge subject of interest at Kaizer Chiefs for the remainder of the season after the end of his suspension.

Khune was in isolation since the beginning of December last year and was welcomed back a week ago just days before the latest Soweto Derby.

The 36-year-old sat on the stands on Saturday after having not trained with the rest of the squad for three months. Now that he is back available for selection, he finds himself racing against time in avoiding yet another single figure appearance season.

Khune had his appearance count in double numbers for 12 consecutive seasons from the day he made his debut in 2007. However, since the 2019/20 season, he has found himself in single figures twice and his matchday numbers have dropped to a quarter.

From the beginning of January, the Ventersdorp-born star has missed 120 games and only played 41 and failed to keep a clean sheet in his last 10.

This has then had a snowball effect that leaves his contract up in the air as it heads to its expiry at the end of June. Chiefs have indicated that their longest-serving player is on his last playing contract, yet Khune has indicated his desire to play on.

The Soweto giants have 10 games remaining this season and the former Bafana Bafana number one will need to play five to get into double figures.

Tough ask considering that he will start at the back of the queue upon his return with Bruce Bvuma having kept seven clean sheets in nine games, while Brandon Petersen is making noise from the bench.
