SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has expressed his delight with the team they have "patched" together this season they kept their CAF Champions League hopes alive.

Gamphani Lungu scored the only goal of the encounter in the first stanza as third-placed SuperSport moved level on points with second-placed Orlando Pirates, with two games to go.

Matsatsantsa are also guaranteed a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup, if they don't qualify for the CAF Champions League, their win took Chiefs out of contention.

"He (Philipps) hasn't played the whole year the boy, he was out for so long, it's such a bity but he was fantastic, I had him from Wits, I let him come here when we sold out (status sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila)," Hunt said on SuperSport TV.

"Great attitude, he had a bit of learning time in Cape Town. I know the boy well but anyway fantastic performance from everybody, Keenan included you know.

"When we played Stellenbosch, I told him you gonna play next week in two weeks time, not enough time but he was magnificent, everybody was.
The former Chiefs coach eventually got into the game and says he's disappointed they did not put away the chances they created.

"It's just a pity we didn't make it count, we had so many good opportunities to really close the game off and we didn't do it.

"We're a battling side, we're putting a team together at the beginning of the year, taking these guys out of contracts and making a team, fantastic.

"As I said if they can play like this every week they'll play for me anytime and that's all we need you know."

Chiefs put pressure on SuperSport in the closing stages of the game and Hunt says he expected that, as they were leading and he was impressed with their first-half performance.

"What do you expect, you're one nil down, they gonna throw a kitchen sink at you, balls across the face of goal but we could have been out of sight and we wouldn't," he continued.

"But anyway we deserve it, I thought we were great, especially first-half, my goodness we were really good and set off a little bit in the second-half but it's all about the control and the distances, which we didn't do well but it's inevitable, you're setting off deeper and deeper but as I said magnificent from the players."

Hunt was not aware of Pirates' results and when he was told they drew against Sekhukhune United, he was excited and said that if they don't qualify for the CAF Champions League next week, hopefully they will do so next season.

"Oh, there you go, listen, nobody deserves any luck but if we work hard we'll get our dues and hopefully if it's not next week, next year maybe," he said.

"As I said, with this group of players and we patched the team together, magnificent, credit to the board and everybody, really proud," he added.
