Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mashego has backed Stellenbosch FC to be the first club to win the Carling Knockout trophy.

The Steve Barker-coached Cape Town-based club will be playing their first-ever cup final when they take on 2019 Nedbank Cup champions TS Galaxy FC.

R6.85 million will be at stake on Saturday when the two sides face each other at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Stellies will bank on the likes of Darrell Matsheke while The Rockets will rely on the experience of Mlungisi Mbunjana and Samir Nurkovic.

"I've been impressed by Stellenbosch, those young boys are doing a fantastic job, they are relentless and they are on song," Mashego tells KickOff.

"Galaxy is blowing a bit hot and cold at times. They give you one good game and then the next game they are nowhere to be seen.

"It's a final of two equally matched teams, and if I have to choose one I think those boys from Stellenbosch stand a good chance.

"Both coaches have not yet won cups in South Africa, but Steve Barker has always been an astute coach and I respect the way he builds his teams.

"He always builds competitive teams, I wonder what he could do coaching bigger teams.

"If I’m being patriotic I would love to give it to Steve Barker. I like his style and what he has done this season with Stellenbosch.

"Remember Stellenbosch has been losing key players to Kaizer Chiefs and also Junior Mendieta to Mamelodi Sundowns but still managed to build a competitive team.

"A good coach builds a team around the players he has, and I don't think Stellenbosch can compete in the market financially for the players that they want.

"So after all his hard work over the years, it would be good if Steve Barker is able to win this cup."
