Kaizer Chiefs have been hurting from the Soweto Derby defeat since the weekend, yet will have reasonable consolation in discussions related to this big match.

Chiefs went down 3-2 to Orlando Pirates on a rare day of thrills and spills in the biggest match on the domestic calendar.

With that win, it meant the Buccaneers completed only their second league double in the 28 years that the local league has been referred to as the PSL.

Three points in the bag came with second place for Pirates, who will now be keen to hold on to the runners-up spot and play Champions League football next season.

For Amakhosi, it adds to the issues that have been the heartbeat of their nine-year trophy drought, though there is a pillow of comfort in Soweto Derby-related matters.

Chiefs still hold the edge over their rivals in all league derbies played since the first PSL era league tie in January 1997.

The Glamour Boys have won 18, while the Sea Robbers are on 14 victories.

There have been 24 draws.

However, the last 10 league derbies have produced a winner, with Chiefs winning seven, while Pirates have taken three points in three, including the last two.

The last stalemate in the league between these two heavyweights was in February 2019 when Daniel Cardoso converted from the spot, before Thembinkosi struck a late equaliser.

Ernst Middendorp was the Chiefs coach at the time, while Micho Sredojevic was in charge at Pirates.

So, as the three-week break prior to Chiefs’ next game on March 30 shrinks into days, they will still take pride in that while they don’t hold the latest bragging rights, they have still have the dominance over their rivals in the league.
