Kaizer Chiefs’ decision to hand Yusuf Maart the armband at the club has come with merits, with the Orlando Pirates graduate earning all credit on the pitch.

Maart was signed at the beginning of last season from Sekhukhune United and has already so much of the club’s trust to wear the captain’s armband since Itumeleng Khune was dropped for alcohol related issues.

Brandon Petersen stood in as skipper for the opening third.

For Maart, since taking over as captain are without defeat in seven league games and just on Wednesday walked away as the man of the match in the 1-0 win over Golden Arrows.

The 28-year-old’s standing has come earned after having loaded the most minutes last season before continuing the same trail this season.

Maart had 34 appearances last season and only missed three games to emerge with the most minutes of all players at 2995.

This season it has been the same having already surpassed the 2000 minutes mark in 24 games.

The coaching changes from Arthur Zwane to Molefi Ntseki then Cavin Johnson have no difference for him.

Under Johnson, Maart will become the first player to reach 1000 minutes on Saturday if he completes 90 minutes like he has been regularly doing.

This means Chiefs have no reason to tamper with the armband as it is worn by an inspirational figure on the pitch.

With what Maart has delivered, the club could be already tempted to turn the option of a further two years into an outright new three-year deal.

Maart has another year on his current deal plus the two-year option.
