The return of Itumeleng Khune from his suspension has widened the options to Kaizer Chiefs’ supercharged goalkeeping department that has another promising talent waiting for his chance.

Khune was suspended for alcohol-related issues that happened in November last year and has not been available for the last eight games.

The veteran goalkeeper’s last appearance was in the 1-0 Soweto Derby defeat and since then Chiefs have not lost a league match, with Bruce Bvuma conceding just once.

Brandon Petersen has offered back-up from the bench after having captained the team earlier in the season before Khune’s brief run as first choice. 

Beyond Khune, Bvuma and Petersen, the Soweto giants have Karabo Molefe waiting in the wings.

Molefe was promoted to the first team in February 2019 straight after Virgil Vries’ line of horrendous errors.

Five years later, he is still yet to make any first-team appearance having had Khune, Bvuma, Petersen and Daniel Akpeyi play ahead of him.

From Ernst Middendorp, Molefe has also had to wait for his chance under Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson.

Now 21, he will feel driven to fight for a chance to finally make his debut.

There is good measure of hope that this will happen before the end of this season with Chiefs having nothing but just pride left to play for after failing in all cup competitions.
