Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has opened up on differences in approaches of former coach Molefi Ntseki and current interim coach Cavin Johnson at Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs were known as a counter-attacking team under Ntseki at the beginning of the season, before he was relieved of his duties and replaced on a temporary basis by Johnson in October last year.

Johnson, in the early stages of his reign, always spoke about how the club needs to go back to 'the Chiefs way' of playing an entertaining brand of football.

Although the former Al Ahly assistant coach got the desired results in the final stretch of 2023, he has had a bumpy start to the second round of the campaign, as the Glamour Boys were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup in the first round.

They will be looking to bounce back after going to the international break on the back of a defeat to archrivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.

Ahead of their DStv Premiership encounter against Chiefs, Tinkler says he does not see much difference at the Soweto giants under Ntseki and Johnson, except that the visitors are more dangerous with their speed and counter-attacking game.

"Yes and no (difference in approach of game between Johnson and Ntseki). I think they're still a team that is extremely dangerous on a counter-attack, they've got a lot of speed up front, so they look to utilise and play with that speed," Tinkler told journalists at City's Open Media Day this week.

"But I think in certain areas of their game, they still have their issues, you know, that we need to exploit. But their threat up front is a massive threat, the speed that they have... and they seem to be utilizing it a lot more successfully right now than at the beginning of the season because they were also playing more counter-attack football.

"But now I don't think they're (necessarily) a counter-attacking team. They are a team that looks to play through the phases, but they're a team that can play pretty direct and put balls behind because of the pace that they have," he said.

"So we have to make sure we deal with that and be wary of that."

The encounter between Amakhosi and City will take place on Saturday afternoon at Athlone Stadium. Kick-off is at 15:30.
