Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has urged the South African Football Association to keep hold of head coach Hugo Broos as Bafana turn their attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana clinched a bronze medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast after beating DR Congo 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw.

Broos' men also collected three accolades at the AFCON in the Fair Play award, Bronze medal and Ronwen Williams’ Golden Glove but could not progress beyond the semi-final.

Speaking to media at the 10bet viewer experience event in Soweto after the match, Khumalo urged the federation to invest in the Belgian mentor amid reports of interest from other countries.

"All I can say is that a bit of a monkey has been removed on my shoulders but I just want to see continuity. Yes, we took third place, now we want to qualify for the final and win it.

"But above all, well done boys.

"Continuation means let’s keep Hugo Broos and Helman, they play a major role in terms of continuity because they know what kind players of he (Broos) wants, what his philosophy entails in terms of taking us forward.

"So, if we were to (let go of) Hugo Broos we are going back to the drawing board, because he found the right tune to make a song that makes South Africa dance.

Meanwhile, Broos has pledged his allegiance to Bafana, stating that if he were to leave, it would be SAFA’s decision.

"If Hugo Broos is leaving SA, then it will be because the federation decides to. That’s all, I’m happy with my job," the 72-year-old said when asked about interest from other countries.
