With Sekhukhune United co-owner Simon Malatji having recently celebrated his birthday, here's a closer look a what the rich businessman is all about!

The story

While the story of Kaizer Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung and Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza are well-known, not the same can be said about other club bosses, especially those who purchased their clubs in recent years. Of course, there's the exception of Royal AM president Shauwn Mkhize, who is already well-known outside the football space.

The story of the club begins in 2019 when brothers Jonas and Simon Malatji bought African All-Stars' ABC Motsepe League status. At the end of their first season in South Africa's third tier, the team acquired the Glad Africa Championship status of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, with the sale confirmed by the PSL in 2020.

The club was officially launched in November 2020 and the side would go on to win the second-tier title in the 2020/21 season and earn promotion to the DStv Premiership - beginning the rein of the Malatji brothers as top bosses.

While it is difficult to speak of one sibling without mentioning the other, Simon Malatji is the primary focus, as he is the chairman of the club. The Limpopo-born executive began his business ventures in the late 90s, as he and his brother Jonas established the Mabotwane Security Services, a company that has since grown to be among the biggest security firms in the country.

Simon is understood to have always had a huge liking for education and is said to have done many odd jobs in Brits in order to fund his studies. His passion for academics has fully paid off, as he obtained his Master Business Administration (MBA) in 2022. The achievement was so big for the chairman that a prestigious ceremony to celebrate the qualification took place in November last year in Manchester, England.

To state the obvious, money isn't an issue for Malajti, as his business portfolio is believed to include Malonjeni Guest Farm and Baphalaborwa Construction. According to News24, the tycoon is planning is to build the club’s headquarters and training facilities in his village.

According to Sunday World, the brothers spent about R13 million when they bought TTM in 2020.
