Heartbroken De Haan says sorry

Posted: 2011-05-21 22:23

Outgoing Ajax Cape Town coach Foppe de Haan has apologised to the club’s fans and Capetonians in general following the Urban Warriors’ capitulation in their search for the Absa Premiership title on Saturday.

Ajax just needed to beat lowly Maritzburg United in order to win the trophy, and at halftime with a 1-0 lead it all looked very good.

However, the pressure got to the young side, allowing Maritzburg back into the game and ultimately resulting in a 2-2 draw. That, coupled with Orlando Pirates’ 2-1 win against Golden Arrows, meant the Buccaneers were crowned 2010/11 champions.

The likeable De Haan didn’t mince his words in his farewell speech as Ajax coach. “First, I want to apologise in a big way; not only to the club, but to all Capetonians.

“In the first half we were much better; they didn’t create a lot and we had the best chances. In the second half we worked hard, but not as a team. I discussed this at training last week, but it happened. We iced in the last match of the season.”

De Haan says the mood in the dressingroom after the match was understandably gloomy, especially veteran goalkeeper Hans Vonk, whose howler for the first goal in his farewell match ultimately cost Ajax dearly.

“We made mistakes, especially the first goal. Hans had a great season and now this. After the match it was a like a funeral in the dressingroom. Hans was totally down, but life goes on.”

De Haan also had some words of wisdom for his successor, who KickOff.com earlier this week revealed is more than likely to be Wim van Zwan.

“I think the [new] coach must continue working with the same style,” he says. “I think this team can improve a lot, but they need to continue training harder. [But] don’t take a totally different coach because otherwise you will go a new way.”

I realy felt sorry for Ajax & Foppe cos as a Pirate I know how it feels to lose the league @ the last moment even on GD...

philemon : 2011-05-22 10:28

Sad day for Ajax- well the team did not have depth- without Scott and Fanteni it wobbled and stumbled. And when Serero is not at his best, things go bad. Pirates has depth and they could have won it ages ago if they could convert their chances. Having five of the best midfielders in the game is a wonderful luxury.

UP THE BUCS

I think the fact that Krol is a genius has always been the song since the past three seasons here. I am one of the people who sang this song and how genius people can at times be obsessed with themselves and forget that there is always a second opinion.

Having said that, it also materialises perfectly when said humanely, life has got no recipe for a guaranteed success. But this proves illusional because man functions well when he has located and aligned himself in his context of operation. Having located and aligned himself, man will also always need something natural about him, his brains. It takes individual capacity and willingness to do all of these things.

Yes, some would love to assert that sport is a collective effort. But that is only when viewed at a macro level. At a micro level, sports is an individual effort because each person assumes a role which must be well carried out so as to make the collectivity succeed. That is how life always leaves much to be desired when people ignore these factors of enculturation and stabilization of a productive energy within a specific context.

It goes without say that things like these are always close to impossibility to achieve and when they a gotten right, why not hold on to them? These things are hard because there is always a zeal to give birth to a culture that is productive out of individuals who are already enculturated in other contexts, which also amounts to deculturation and acculturation proccesses. That is how team establishment and maintenance need some kind of special human effort.

Now, if a coach lasts for long, then there is one culture that materializes and becomes viable and autonomous. This always benefit the players, coach, supporters, etc. We ought to know that culture is not created but evolves out of merging and demerging or desolution of cultures and habits of various kinds. It always is a complexly modelled bunch of isms and ilities that would rather be allowed space to maintain itself if progress is needed.

Culture is a spiritual system if can be said that way, emphasis on system. Any attempt to temper with a system is always not advisable when there is no real reason for doing it. So, I also endorse the brilliant idea that we still have to retain Krol for as much as he is still alive.

Mr. Knowit All: 2011-05-22 11:32

Ajax CT lost the league on goal difference to Orlando Pirates. That should not take away from a fantastic season we had. 60+ points is good enough to win a championship. Next season we will be better with the lessons learnt this season. Ajax CT is the future.

Mpimpi: 2011-05-22 14:28

Foppe there is no need to feel down, you did us all soccer loving fans and supporters proud with what you did with those young stars in Cape Town. we saw everybody shinning and you helped the players to realize their individual and collective abilities. you created out of an ordinary side a brilliant squad of young boys who were intelligent and very creative, talented and displayed their skill with distinction. They faired better than the over-rated cHIVs players who won most of their games in the media with certain newspapers and magazines giving them more coverage than any other team. they thought in their simple minds and fake arrogance that they are the force to reckon with. If cHIVs come again with that vintage, foreign based squad, they are going to get another walloping from the likes of Baroka and Pretoria university...emphasizing the fact that they are a paper team, like a house of cards that collapse if Shabba is not playing and fail to score if the over-rated Musona does not score!!!gone are the days when corrupt referees used to assist cHIVs to win. No wonder they are now struggling even financially!!!

Button : 2011-05-22 22:33

After watching Ajax vs PMB united I jus feel lyk hatin Krol even more 4 chasin away Schalkwyk dat guy is a germ everythin he touches becomes gold if not platinum he possesses d basics of futbal knows when 2 hold on 2 d ball nd when 2 lay d killer pass pity Krol deemed him surplus hence I stil think he must walk.

Button  : 2011-05-22 22:52

2 all those who stole 3 points from Bucs we want them back especially Ajax. I once told whoeva cared 2 listen dat Ajax players r stil young they can't lift d psl trophy coz its 2 heavy 4 them eventually they succumbed 2 pressure they must grow sum more muscles. At least they gav us a run 4 our money.

Kgadima: 2011-05-22 23:34

Sorry coach,it was really sad the way it turned out in the end.You have every reason to be proud though, you put up such a good show without any expensive players. Your exploits will be remembered along with those of the Mitch D'Avary coached Swallows and the title winning Manning Rangers of Gordon Igesund. We will not forget you.Good lunck and fare well.
