UEFA Champions League match report FC Basel v Manchester City 13 February 2018

City almost found the opening goal in the third minute through a brilliant free-kick from Bernardo Silva on the edge of the box but goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik was equal to the task.

IIkay Gundogan gave Pep Guardiola’s charges the lead in the 15th minute with a header at the near post following a corner by Kevin De Bruyne, 1-0.

Silva got on the score-sheet in the 18th minute as Raheem Sterling sent a telling cross towards the Portuguese who netted from close range, 0-2.

Sergio Aguero made it 3-0 in the 24th minute with a powerful low shot past Vaclik after some good pressing by the visitors.

City were still playing at high intensity after 35 minutes and were threatening to run riot with the Swiss side struggling to get out of their half.

Gundogan completed his brace and made it 4-0 in the 55th minute with a curling strike that found the top corner following a cut-back from Aguero on the left wing.

Gundogan was denied a hat-trick 15 minuets before time after meeting Aguero’s cross with a half-volley inside the box but Vaclik was on hand to deny the Germany international.

City slowed down the tempo in the closing stages of the second half as they saw out the rest of the match with no problems.
