The 37-year-old former Chipolopolo star who now plies his trade at Pretoria Callies in the GladAfrica Championship holds the record for the most goals scored in a single campaign following with the 25 league goals he scored for Chiefs in the 2004/05 season.
Mbesuma who also played for Portsmouth, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows netted 35 times for Amakhosi in all competitions that remarkable season.
The last time a PSL player came close to the 25-goal tally was Siyabonga Nomvete with 19 league goals for Swallows in the 2011/12 campaign.
2019/20 Season PSL Golden Boot winner with 16 goals Shalulile, has so far scored 12 goals in the DStv Premiership in 16 league outings so far this season.
Shalulile would need to score 13 more goals in Sundowns' 14 remaining league matches to at least equal Mbesuma's record.
"It can be broken," Mbesuma tells snl24.com/kickoff when asked about the possibility of his 16-year record finally being broken.
"Shalulile is doing well, and If he can continue on this trajectory he can, but it won't be easy."
