Banyana Banyana got off to a difficult start at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Sweden, who netted a late winner.

WAFCON Final hero Hilda Magaia opened the scoring for South Africa, before Fridolina Rolfo equalised just after the hour mark.

Amanda Ilestedt broke Banyana hearts with a 90th-minute winner, ensuring all three points for the 3rd-ranked outfit.

Here's how the readers reacted to the "Banyana denied first World Cup point by Sweden" story:

"If she field swart again I'll close my eyes for 90 minutes bcz I don't trust her," says @limitless.

"Not our soul black child. Andile Dlamini has proven herself in all levels but is denied a world cup game to save SA," says lombosngoepe.

"Desiree Ellise is not a good coach and was never a good coach. She is just lucky sometimes," says bhekilekhuleni6.

"Don't be naive wena, that we almost pulled off a draw in itself was a big performance. You can't seriously think a team ranked 54th would not struggle against the 3rd ranked side in a competitive game," replies Lesoganatsoko.

"'Talk on the field' loud and clear," says INBOX VAT ALLES.

"When will South Africa teams learn to play football accordingly. South Africa only has two teams that, after scoring goals they don't apply a defensive mode, and that's Sundowns and Pirates. That Sweden team, was so vulnerable to be attacked. But, needless to say, Banyana decided to apply unnecessary defensive mode to their downfall.

"I hope in the upcoming games, they will apply a good approach so that even if they lose, they leave a mark on the field of play and play beautiful, thrilling football," says winterv.me.

"Good luck mantombazane!! We are behind you," says user584597.

A number of new signings were on display as Amakhosi went down 1-0 to Young Africans SC in a pre-season friendly in Tanzania.

New Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki started handed starts to Mduduzi Mdantsane, Thatayaone, Given Msimango, Tebogo Potsane, Pule Mmodi and Edson Castillo.

Buoyed by a sold-out home crowd, Yanga had the better of the chances on the night, scoring their solitary goal on the stroke of half-time curtesy of Zambian international Kennedy Musonda.

Here's how the readers reacted to the "New signings on display as Chiefs fall to Young Africans" story:

"Chiefs are only big in Soweto," says mashifanae.

"Same old, same old. No clear cut chances were created, it was a boring game. Newcomers were struggling to concentrate and proved to be less attack-minded. I don't see them winning anything," says Eduardo Dos Santos.

"I am happy and understand clearly what Ntseki is doing," says emmanueltankiso.

"I didn't see purpose going forward. No attacking options on the bench. This Mahlatsi boy is not Chiefs material. No striker. Nje iChiefs ayilumi (Chiefs don't bite)," says user584597.

"You nailed it my brother. No proper pattern or structural play, we seemed scared to attack our opponents, it worries me," says thabani.nene85.

"But there has to be some kind of seriousness from Chiefs, how can they wear a practice-kit and expect to win games," says makhause(2).

"It's a pity that a lot of the arm chair critics only watched highlights of the game, to be fair the game was balanced in the middle, the defence needs a bit of time to gel.

"It's only a friendly match after all, this is where coaches use different combinations to see what works and what doesn't. The real test will be the resumption of the league," says sizweking.
