CAF Champions League: 16 First Round fixtures after Orlando Pirates and Simba SC shock exits

The first round of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League has sprung up some exciting fixtures for a place in the group stages, despite the surprise exits of Orlando Pirates and Simba SC.

The exits of Pirates and Simba were the biggest shocks of the preliminary round fixtures with the giants of South Africa and Tanzania displaying some of the most enterprising football in Africa over the past 12 months.

Green Eagles, the Zambian side making their debut in the continental showpiece, advanced at the expense of the Buccaneers after a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.

While the Tanzanian champions succumbed to União Desportiva do Songo from Mozambique on the away goals rule after they drew 1-1 at the National stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Despite the shortcomings of the two side's both Tanzania and South Africa will have representatives in the next round in the form of Mamelodi Sundowns and Young Africans - with the former offered a favourable tie against Côte d'Or of the Seychelles.

There were no surprises with Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek as they showed no mercy with 13-0 aggregate wins over Atlabara and Dekedaha from South Sudan and Somalia respectively.

Fellow North African giants Raja Casablanca, Etoile du Sahel also eased into the final rounds before the group stages, where last year's finalists Esperance and Wydad were automatically placed.
