Bloemfontein Celtic win Macufe Cup

First-half goals from Prince Olomu and Kaizer Motaung Jnr. had left the sides locked at 1-1 by the end of 90 minutes and Phunya Sele Sele held their nerve better in the penalty shootout to claim the title two years after first wining it in 2008. Celtic drew first blood in the 11th minute, with Olomu putting his team 1-0 ahead. The goal was made by Bennett Chenene, who drove forward and fired a shot against the post – the rebound fell to the Nigerian, who calmly worked space for a shot and steered the ball home with Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman left stranded. Chiefs almost came up with an immediate reply – Abia Nale's shot from the right of the penalty area was palmed away by Patrick Tignyemb and George Lebese should have tucked the ball home at the far post but only succeeded in finding the side netting. Lebese was in action again in the 15th minute, testing the Celtic ‘keeper with a low shot at his near post but Tignyemb turned the ball away for a corner kick. Two minutes later Chiefs earned a penalty, with Tignyemb tripping up Motaung Jnr. in the 18-yard box. Jose Torrealba took on the responsibility of the spot kick but pulled his shot wide of the ‘keeper's right-hand post. The open and exciting game produced another goal just a couple of minutes before the half time break, with Motaung Jr leveling the score at 1-1. Mthokozisi Yende created the goal, surging forward from midfield and producing a perfect through ball for the striker to touch beyond the reach of Tignyemb. The second half didn't quite live up to the level of the first, with the pace of the game slowing noticeably. Chiefs opted to make five substitutions at the start of the second half, while Celtic used their changes at intervals throughout the 45 minutes. Scoring chances were harder to come by, though Nathan Paulse seemed the most likely to find the back of the net – on 64 minutes it took a brave piece of goalkeeping from Bartman to deny the tall Celtic striker. Chiefs had two penalty appeals, with substitutes Siyabulela Songwiqi and David Mathebula both going down in the box under challenges, but the referee waved away both appeals and the visitors didn't really complain on either occasion. Celtic substitute Lennox Bacela almost scored his first goal for the club, sending a glancing header just wide in the 86th minute, and a short while later Motaung Jnr. had a great chance to steal the game for Amakhosi but his left-footed effort was directed straight at Tignyemb. The full-time whistle saw the contest go to penalties. After both sides missed their third attempts it came down to the first set of sudden death kicks – Tshifhiwa Mmbooi blazed his penalty high over the bar and Danny Venter converted to see Celtic win 5-4.  Bloemfontein Celtic (1) 1 (Olomu 11') – Celtic win 5-4 on penalties Kaizer Chiefs (1) 1 (Motaung Jnr. 43')  Celtic: (4-4-2) Tignyemb; Khaile, Nthethe, Mathoho, Hlela; Oersen (Mshengu 79'), Kekana (Kerspuy 69'), Olomu (Seepamore 72'), Chenene (Venter 46'); Mulenga (Kalala 65'), Paulse (Bacela 65') Chiefs: (4-4-2) Bartman; Matle, Molekwane (Mmbooi 46'), Rooi, Masenamela; Nale (Nhleko 46'), Dladla (Sibeko 46'), Yende (Songwiqi 62'), Lebese (Tau 46'); Motaung Jnr., Torrealba (Mathebula 46') Penalty sequence: (Chiefs shoot first) Sibeko scores 1-0, Nthethe scores 1-1; Songwiqi scores 2-1, Seepamore scores 2-2; Mathebula misses 2-2, Bacela misses 2-2; Matle scores 3-2, Kerspuy scores 3-3; Masenamela scores 4-3, Hlela scores 4-4; Mmbooi misses 4-4, Venter scores 4-5.
