Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed what he believes changed Paul Pogba, who is suspended from football following a doping ban.

Although he has appealed the ruling, Pogba is currently serving a four-year ban for doping, which has derailed his career.

Mourinho worked with the French midfielder during his time in charge of United between July 2016 and December 2018.

They were infamously involved in a training group bust-up, which left their relationship strained, and it is believed they have never truly reconciled since.

With Pogba having played 108 games under Mourinho, the Portuguese boss has now explained what he feels went wrong with his once trusted playmaker.

He told The Telegraph: "The only thing I say is that it happens with almost everybody in some moments of your career: you lose a little bit the sense of who you are and what you have to be.

"The season after France won the [2018] World Cup, I think Paul came back different.

"The World Cup brought him into a dimension where football was not the most important thing for him.

"Sharing the philosophy of everyone; everyone with the same level of responsibilities."

Mourinho, who is currently without a club, also suggested that he did not have the support of the United hierarchy on the matter.

"When you are supported by the power, by the hierarchy, the message that passes through is very positive in the group," he added.

"When you are not supported – because the player is more important or what the player represents is more important – then you are in a fragile situation."
