Manchester United Erik ten Hag has given a reason as to why Antony has struggled in the Premier League.

The Brazilian winger joined the Red Devils from Ajax last season but has failed to make a big impact in the attack, having registered just four goals and two assists in 41 Premier League appearances.

Antony has received criticism from pundits and former Red Devils players this season, but Ten Hag says the off-field issues have affected the player.

The Brazilians spent three weeks away from the first team to deal with allegations of violence in Brazil and England from his former girlfriend.

"I can explain and I think it's very simple, his off-field issues stop him playing," Ten Hag told a news conference, as per ESPN.

"His first year was OK, the preseason was very OK. First four games were very good, but from the moment he was out and then he came back he didn't deliver the performances you should expect from him and he can do so much better.

"It has had an effect, an impact on him, definitely. He has to deal with that, he has to sort them out but he has to do better."

The Red Devils are back in action on Sunday evening when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
