Manchester United advanced to the FA Cup final after defeating Championship side Coventry City on penalties after an entertaining 120 minutes of action.

Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag was forced to a makeshift central defence as Casemiro partnered Harry Maguire, who was the only fit centre-back at the moment.

After a cagey opening, Marcus Rashford should have opened the scoring after 18 minutes when he was played through on goal by Casemiro's long pass, but put his strike wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The Red Devils were ahead six minutes later when Scott McTominay bagged his 10th goal of the campaign by turning Diogo Dalot's low cross in the six-yard area.

The Championship side, meanwhile, struggled to fashion any openings even with United's make-shift defence but the Manchester outfit would go on to double their lead before the break through Maguire's towering header.

Ten Hag's men carried that momentum into the second half and went on to increase their advantage just before the hour mark when Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net with a deflected strike in the box.

However, Coventry did pull a goal back after 72 minutes when Ellis Simms was left un-marked in the box and slammed home a first-time volley at Andre Onana's near post.

With 11 minutes to play, the Championship outfit made it 3-2 and set up a nervy finish when Callum O'Hare's strike from distance took awicked deflection and sailed over Onana and into the net.

The game would go on to extra-time as Coventry were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute, which Haji Wright converted after Wan-Bissaka's handball, sending the Coventry fans into hysteria.

Coventry thought they had won it late in extra-time through Victor Torp 's late strike, but VAR came to United's rescue and called on offside, which ultimately sent the game to penalties.

United would go on to have the final say as they triumphed in the penalty shoot-out after Coventry missed two spot-kicks, allowing Hojlund to net the winner and set up a final against Manchester City.
