Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly held showdown talks with Alejandro Garnacho over his recent conduct on social media.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly held showdown talks with Alejandro Garnacho over his recent conduct on social media.

A certain Manchester United star has now reportedly been summoned for showdown talks after he "liked" social media posts slamming manager Erik ten Hag.

This would not the first time a United player has found themselves in hot water over their conduct on social media. In fact, it is largely for this reason that winger Jadon Sancho is no longer at the club after he publicly accused the Dutch coach of making him a scapegoat in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

This led to the winger being frozen out of the first team and being instructed to train alone before he sealed a loan move to Borussia Dortmund in January after four months out in the cold.

Alejandro Garnacho is now seemingly the latest to get into the manager's bad books after he "liked" two posts by Mark Goldbridge, host of the Red Devils fan channel call The United Stand.

The Argentine attacker was substituted off at half-time during his side's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday, and Goldbridge criticised this decision, taking to social media to write: "Garnacho has been one of our best players this season. Poor first half but taking him off at half-time and holding him up as the problem is a joke. Many have done much worse week in week out and are still out there."

The 19-year-old later "liked" this post, seemingly agreeing that being taken off at half-time was not the right call by his boss.

Ten Hag would later reflect on his decision in a post-match press conference.

"On the second half, there were two things. 'Stay in formation in possession and don’t get erratic'," the 54-year-old said, according to the Daily Mail. "Because we will create, and we gave a lot of space away. And the second thing is do your job in the defending part.

"It's the truth that we, in this moment, with all the problems we have, we play to our levels and we can play very good to our levels."

This explanation appeared to incense Goldbridge even further, though, as he went on to accuse Ten Hag of throwing the teenager under the bus.

"Ten Hag subtly blaming Garnacho in the post-match press conference... not a good look throwing a 19-year-old under the bus who has actually delivered for you this season. But then again, he's clearly scared of upsetting the bigger earners," he wrote.

The Old Trafford sensation "liked" this post too, seemingly condoning the slander against his coach.

Per the Daily Mail, Ten Hag has since had a private discussion with the player after he was made aware of the posts, while Garnacho has since "unliked" them.

A club spokesperson told the UK outlet that the matter was being handled internally, and did not confirm whether or not the Argentine attacker would be punished.
