Samuel Eto'o has reportedly received a massive payout for his role as an official ambassador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The huge payout Samuel Eto'o, who is under investigation for match-fixing in Cameroon, received from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has now reportedly been revealed.

The Indomitable Lions legend is currently mired in controversy as he faces allegations of corruption and match-fixing in his native country, with former striker said to have aided a second division team's promotion to the top flight last season.

CAF has since confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the matter, while there have also been increasing calls for his resignation from his role as president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) .

However, prior to the match-fixing allegations emerging, Eto'o was one of the official ambassadors for the global showpiece in Qatar last December, which is now said to have earned him a mouthwatering sum of cash.

According to News Cameroon, the ex-FC Barcelona star received a lofty €36 million (R727 million) for his role at the global competition.

Perhaps incredibly, that amount is far superior to what the Cameroon national team earned for making it to the World Cup group stage, said to be $9 million (R168 million), according to FIFA.

Eto'o, meanwhile, was also embroiled in controversy in Qatar, when he was caught on video violently attacking a fan outside the stadium following a match between Brazil and South Korea on 5 December.

He released a statement in the aftermath explaining his actions, saying, according to the Daily Mirror: "On last 5 December, after the Brazil-South Korea match, I had a violent altercation with a person who was probably an Algerian supporter.

"I would like to apologise for losing my temper and reacting in a way that does not match my personality. I apologise to the public for this unfortunate incident.

"I pledge to continue to resist the relentless provocation and daily harassment of some Algerian supporters. Indeed, since the Cameroon-Algeria match on 29 March in Blida, I have been the target of insults and allegations of cheating without any evidence.

"During this World Cup, Cameroonian fans have been harassed and pestered by Algerians on the same subject. I would like to mention that the scenario of Algeria's defeat was cruel but perfectly in line with the rules and ethics of our sport.

"All the appeals made by the Algerian Football Federation to the competent Jurisdictions have been rejected. I therefore call on the Algerian authorities and Federation to take their responsibilities to put an end to this unhealthy climate before a more serious tragedy occurs.

"To Fennecs' fans, I wish that they find peace and manage to overcome the disappointment of a painful defeat, now behind us."
