Date 'set' for £6bn Man Utd takeover, new owner race 'won'

After multiple rounds of bids, Sheikh Jassim now appears to be in pole position to become the club's new owner, and according to The Sun, a date has been set and an announcement could be made as early as October as the Qatari camp complete their "due diligence on the club". 

The takeover has been an ongoing saga since it was first announced in November last year that the Glazer family, who have been at the helm for 18 years, would be putting the club up for sale. 

The US family purchased the club in 2005, taking on debt to finance their £800 million (R191 billion) takeover.

Since then, however, the servicing of that debt has weighed heavily on United, with the latest financial figures indicating that the club's gross debt is still more than £500 million (R119 billion), leading many to protest the Glazer's ownership and running of the team over the past few years.

However, the Red Devils could soon rejoice at being debt-free for the first time since before the American family took over as it is further reported that the sheikh is ready wipe out the club's debt.

He also reportedly plans to upgrade Old Trafford and the club's training facilities, all while continuing to invest in the team.

While things may look bright off the pitch, things are looking dull on it, though.

After losing 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, United have announced that summer signing Mason Mount has been ruled out for a few weeks due to an injury he picked up during that game.

"The small complaint is expected to keep Mount out until the international break next month," the club said in a statement.
