An update has been provided following the shock on-field collapse of an African star, who won the recent Africa Cup of Nations, on Sunday night.

Roma defender Evan Ndicka had to be carried off the field by a stretcher after he collapsed during his side's Serie A encounter against Udinese on Sunday.

According to Sky Sports in Italy, the 24-year-old underwent an electrocardiogram after he was taken to the locker room, with the test said to have ruled out heart problems as the cause of his collapse.

With the score at 1-1 at the time, the match was suspended following the incident, and the player was taken to hospital for further checks after regaining consciousness.

Giallorossi boss Daniele De Rossi and his side visited the 2023 AFCON winner at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Udine before returning to Rome.

After exiting the hospital, Roma's head coach briefly addressed reporters by saying "good, good" as a reassuring message.

"The squad went to visit Ndicka at the hospital," the club wrote in a statement on social media.

"Evan is feeling better and is in good spirits. He will remain in the hospital for further observations."

Ndicka collapsed in the 72nd minute of the game, and the remaining time cannot be played within 24 hours of the incident, according to Serie A regulations.

It is believed, however, that a decision on the matter will only be made after the Giallorossi take on AC Milan in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday.
