Nigeria have now reportedly offered recently departed coach Jose Peseiro a contract extension.

A top African nation has now reportedly made a lucrative offer of $80 000 (R1.5 million) a month in an apparent bid to keep their coach.

On Friday, Jose Peseiro announced his exit from the Nigeria national team helm after nearly two years in charge.

The Portuguese tactician's tenure was not without problems as he was prompted to take a pay cut during his reign following reports of financial issues in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

With the coach having served the full term of his previous contract, he confirmed that the deal expired last week.

On Friday, 1 March, Peseiro wrote on X: "Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment. Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you."

However, it is now being reported that the NFF are desperate to retain the coach's services until 2026 after he steered the team to a second-place finish at the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

As such, the Nigerian football governing body has reportedly presented a contract extension to the manager.

According to OwnGoalNigeria, Peseiro's representatives have received an offer of R1.5 million a month for the tactician to stay in the helm for the next two years.

It is claimed the two parties are in talks, with the coach said to be open to staying with the Super Eagles, with Peseiro believed to have a good relationship with Nigerian sports minister John Enoh, which could be key when he makes his final decision as to where he takes his career next.

It is understood, though, that Peseiro is also reviewing other offers he has on the table, including roles in Africa as well as in his homeland, Portugal.
