CAF has reportedly decided Moroccan referee Redouane Jayed's fate following his behaviour at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF has reportedly decided Moroccan referee Redouane Jayed's fate following his behaviour at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF has now reportedly taken action against the Moroccan referee who refused to officiate the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal match between Bafana Bafana and DR Congo.

Earlier this month, match official Redouane Jayed made headlines after he reportedly refused to take charge of South Africa's third-place playoff against DRC.

Jayed reportedly felt that he was unfairly snubbed for the AFCON final between Nigeria and eventual winners Ivory Coast, a match he felt he deserved given his credentials.

The referee later lifted the lid on the situation, expressing a great deal of disappointment over the decision not to appoint him for the final.

"I did not understand why I was ignored, so I refused to attend the match for third place, because no one spoke to me to explain to me what happened," he said on Radio Mars.

"I asked for clarifications, but unfortunately I did not receive them, so it was a response.

"I did not delve into the rest of the details, but what I experienced in Cote d'Ivoire caused me great pain, made me frustrated, and I fear that no Moroccan referee will attend the World Cup, because strange things happen at the level of appointments that I do not understand."

With CAF having maintained its silence on the matter since, it is now reported that the African football's organising body has finally reached a decision on the referee's behaviour at AFCON 2023.

According to Algerian newspaper Al-Shorouk, CAF has taken the decision to permanently exclude Jayed from their list of international referees due to his actions at the tournament.

Arabic news outlet Masrawy further reports that CAF had also removed Jayed from the CAF Champions League tie between Etoile du Sahel and Esperance de Tunis on 24 February, replacing him with fellow Moroccan referee Samir Guezzaz.
