SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained the absence of highly rated centre back Luke Fleurs amid reports of interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

With 24 appearances under his belt, the young centre-back was voted the PSL Young player of the Season last season.

In the current campaign, however, Fleurs has featured just five times in 13 matches for Matsatsantsa and has not played since August.

He’s also reported to be under the radar of  Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates however, neither club is likely to make an offer, having recently signed two centre-backs each at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Luke’s coach, Gavin Hunt insists the 22-year-old’s absence from the line is purely down to competition at the club.

"He [Fleurs] played quite a bit in the beginning then there was a change of system or whatever it is," Hunt told journalists at the club’s Media Day on Wednesday.

"But I think guys like Tyson [Hlatshwayo] and TT [Thatayaone Ditlhokwe] have done quite well so hey, please, may long it continue."

"I think the most important part of the team are the centre-backs, I think they’ve done well. A good partnership. Luke has to force his way in. He got himself out. He got suspended and you know, it is what it is."

Fleurs is in the last year of his contract with SuperSport United and will be free to start speaking to other clubs as soon as January should SuperSport fail to tie him down to a new contract.

With four wins in their last five games, SuperSport United are establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Only Mamelodi Sundowns has a better league record with five wins from five.

The 22-year-old is in contention to start against Swallows on Sunday where Matsatsantsa will have a chance to make it five wins in five as well.
