SuperSport United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Modern Future FC in their opening CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash on Sunday afternoon.

Youngster Risen Albert made his first start of the season and partnered Etiosa Ighodaro, as Matsatsantsa chased a winning start in the group stages.

Albert aimed to get the team off the ground earlier on where he worked the tightest of space from a decent angle to get a shot away, but didn’t pose any problems.

Zimbabwean-born Ighodaro followed up the visitors scare later on and pushed the opposite man in goal Mohamed Elrhim to a remarkable save with a solid attempt.

SuperSport should’ve taken the lead with ten minutes to halftime when a half-volley from Keean Bezuidenhout whizzled past the intended target and left Modern off the hook.

Elrhim was assigned to action five minutes in the second half as he needed to come alive to thwart a sprawling effort from Shandre Campbell following a counter-attack.

Modern Future were more assertive a little inside the resumption and watched Abdelkadir El Ouadi in advanced positions to get a look in, but United kept it tight.

The Egyptian side went ahead in the last 15 minutes after Ghanam Mohamed capitalised on a delivery in a promising position and fired past Ricardo Goss.

Matsatsantsa introduced club record scorer Bradley Grobler in the final stages as well as Ime Okon, with Kegan Johannes and Jesse Donn removed.

Campbell received a good chance a little later to pull it level, but had goalkeeper Elrhim on high alert once again, and left the host to take all the points on display.
