Mkhwanazi has signed on a one-year deal with an option to renew.
He has been training with the club for a couple of weeks now and comes in to provide experience at the back for Kaitano Tembo’s team.
"SuperSport United is delighted to announce the signature of defender Buhle Mkhwanazi on a one-year deal with option to renew," the club statement read.
Stan Matthews, the SuperSport United CEO added: "Buhle brings us maturity, character and leadership at the back where the void of Clayton Daniels, Bongani Khumalo and Grant Kekana has left us thin in terms of experience.
"Buhle knows what is required to win trophies at an ambitious club like ours with his success at Wits and we think he will add value to the team and positively impact our younger players in the squad."
The 31-year-old didn’t play last season with his last appearance due to contractual complications after the sale of Bidvest Wits to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
His last appearance was a year ago at Wits and he has previously played for Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic and the University of Pretoria.
