Mamelodi Sundowns will not be throwing in the towel on loaned-out rising star Promise Mkhuma, according to head coach Rulani Mokwena.

The 23-year-old was brought the club’s academy ranks and dispute somewhat of an impress loan spell at Cape Town All Stars, there was no place for Mkhuma in the star-studded Downs squad.

He speedy midfielder was then out once more on loan Motsepe Foundation Championship side UP Tuks where he impressed.

Speaking at the Nedbank Cup quarter-final draw on Monday evening, Mokwena insisted that Mkhuma remains in the club’s plans.

"I don’t know [what went wrong]," Mokwena responded to journalists when asked what had gone wrong for Mkhuma at Downs.

"He is a kid I admire a lot and I think he is very very talented. I wanted the last game as I said, He should have scored two in fact – a very good player and one that we haven’t released.

"Because we still think he has potential and he has the quality to represent Sundowns in the future so hopefully he can bounce back.

"No youth career, is linear. Your trajectory is from here to there and it’s straight and there’s ups and downs and life is also like that.

"It’s the same for Promise, that’s the same for the youngsters, [Siyabonga] Mabena and there’s a boy now Kutlwano who excites me a lot but still there will be ups there will be down and they will improve, they just have to be coachable."

Sundowns will meet University of Pretoria (Tuks) in the to battle it out for a spot in the semi-finals of the cup competition.
