'Is that clear?' - Downs get upper hand in Yanga 'goal' drama

Renowned former referee Victor Hlungwani has explained why Tanzanian side Young Africans were not awarded a goal during their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the quarter-final of the CAF Champions League.

A bitterly disappointed Yanga side has taken to CAF to lodge a formal complaint against the officiating during their clash with the Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld Stadium last Friday.

One of the major talking points was a 'goal' scored by Yanga’s Stepheni Aziz Ki, which was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee [VAR] amid confusion on whether the ball had crossed the line or not.

Speaking on SABC Sport’s SoccerZone, Hlungwani explained that the whole of the ball did not cross the whole goal line.

"Did the whole ball cross the goal line? You can see there is a small piece there. Whether it is 99% over the line and 1% is on the line, no goal. It should be 100% over the line, then it would be a goal," Hlungwani emphasized.

"That small piece on the goal line, that’s how we can judge. People put the ball in the air, it’s not easy to judge a thunderbolt shot, but here, on the line.

"We can easily evaluate and say did the whole of the ball cross the whole line? Those who say it’s clear, is that clear? No. We can’t give that as a goal, it’s not clear.

"So, Tanzania, this ball did not cross over the line. Protest or no protest, CAF will not take it. Good position by VAR not to award a goal."

Meanwhile, Sundowns return to DStv Premiership action when they take on Cape Town Spurs on Tuesday, 19:30.
