Mamelodi Sundowns’ biggest rivals Kaizer Chiefs will again put on miserable faces this season as a historic treble hunt adds shine to the trophy cabinet at Chloorkop.

Sundowns have their seventh consecutive league title just about wrapped up as they now need only nine points from nine games to seal the deal.

The Brazilians could still win the league without adding any further points to the 53 that they already have, which gives them a 13-point cushion over the chasing pack, who all have seven games to play.

Beyond lifting the title, the rest of the league campaign will evidently turn into a fun ride revolving around chasing records.

The pain of Sundowns’ success will be felt heavily down the N1 South at the Chiefs Village.

This season’s league title will count as trophy number 17 for Sundowns since the Soweto giants last won a trophy in May 2015.

Sundowns still have the CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup to play for having reached the semi-finals of both competitions.

Should they win them both, they will move to 19 titles since Amakhosi knew the feeling of trophy happiness.

The Brazilians have already lifted the R75 million-worth African Football League and are chasing another R75 million in the Champions League.

Chiefs’ trophy count was at 20 when they lifted the league title under Stuart Baxter in May 2015 and proudly stood as the country’s dominant club since the start of the PSL in August 1996.

Sundowns only had half of that loot but have now gone on to surpass Amakhosi and create a gap of six, which could stretch to nine at the end of the season.

Orlando Pirates remain third, with SuperSport United fourth.
