Tributes continue to pour in for slain Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs, who met his untimely death on Wednesday evening.

The former South African junior international was still waiting to play his first official match for the club, having signed from SuperSport in October last year.

The young defender was gunned down by hijackers in Johannesburg on Thursday night.

Apparently, the 24-year-old was waiting to be served by a petrol attendant when the incident happened.

SuperSport United goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson says the talented former Matsatsantsa fullback could have easily played for Bafana Bafana.

"Very sad. It's another football tragedy. Such a gifted player taken too soon," a grief-stricken Johnson tells KickOff.

"I don't know exactly what happened but can only say that Luke was a magnificent player and it's so sad that he is no longer with us.

"He was a truly gifted youngster who could have gone on to achieve huge things in football.

"There have been too many senseless deaths of footballers. Shootings, car accidents, etc."

Johnson says the Cape Town-born player's move from SuperSport to Amakhosi Kaizer Chiefs afforded him an opportunity to redeem himself having struggled for lack of game-time under Gavin Hunt.

"We were (looking forward to seeing him) get his career back on track and perform to his ability. He was good enough to be part of Bafana as well."
