Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson's decision to hold a training session at 02:00 on Sunday has come under scrutiny after a narrow loss against Stellenbosch FC.

Chiefs' chances of challenging for continental places in the DStv Premiership standings suffered a blow after a 1-0 defeat to Stellies on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of the game against the Cape Winelands outfit, Johnson raised eyebrows after revealing that they had a training session in the early hours of Sunday morning after they returned from their goalless draw against Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium the previous day.

"We haven’t had this many back-to-back games since I have been with the team. We returned from Cape Town on Saturday night and had a regeneration session at 02:00 in the morning so as to allow the players to rest all of Sunday, which is the best recovery. Today (Monday) we train, and we'll be ready for tomorrow," Johnson told the club's official website.

Before facing City, the Glamour Boys had a three-week break, as they were not involved in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 clashes, a week before the international break (which lasted two weeks).

Yet, after the loss to Steve Barker's men, there were observations that the Amakhosi players looked fatigued and lethargic, especially in the first stanza after going to the break trailing 1-0.

Speaking to the media after the match, Johnson dismissed such suggestions.

"I don't think you're watching all the games. I personally think you didn't see the game on Saturday against Cape Town City, because I don't think my players came out the blocks unfit, because on Saturday you could see that there was about six or seven Cape Town City players that were cramping and tonight my players were okay," he told reporters in a post-match press conference.

"For the eye, (if) you think that they came out slower, then that's your opinion, but I don't think they did that (were unfit)," he added.

Chiefs will be back in DStv Premiership action when they visit Chippa United on Saturday afternoon at Buffalo City Stadium.
