Cavin Johnson is walking towards the end of the road at Kaizer Chiefs.

Cavin Johnson is counting down towards the end of his caretaker reign at Kaizer Chiefs with months having now shrunk into weeks.

Johnson has found the going tough in improving the results for Chiefs since being asked to take over from Molefi Ntseki last October.

The team has won just once in the last nine games and as a measure of how bad their campaign has been, they no longer have any mathematical chance of overtaking Mamelodi Sundowns at the top.

Sundowns have another 10 league games to play, while Chiefs have seven.

For Johnson, the biggest fear is that he is now at the risk of walking away with one of the worst records of any coach that has been in charge since the Soweto giants last won a trophy.

The remaining seven games, which will begin with fixtures against Richards Bay FC, SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, need Chiefs to pick up points instead of dropping them to avoid finishing outside the Top Eight.

Their recent form rules them out of contending for a CAF place.

At 15 games, Johnson has won only five, which is not convincing and part of the reasons why he will not remain in charge next season.

The 65-year-old has already heard how loud the message from management has been in their search for a new coach, which has left the dressing room in suspense.

That process of bringing in a suitable candidate appears to be getting complicated with each passing week.

This is despite the fact that Chiefs have been presented with the option of one of the most experienced coaches in Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

There has also been mention of Manqoba Mngqithi.

The Naturena-based side has had a myriad of CVs flood their inbox, but they remain undecided on the man for the job up to now despite plans to have this matter put to bed before the end of the season.

To land a top coach who will fix the mess at the club, Chiefs will have to stretch their budget and loosen the screws on controlling the structure of the rest of the technical team.

The unpredictability of events at Naturena also leave Johnson not guaranteed of his head of development job should results keep going south.
