Kaizer Chiefs’ agonising trophy drought will stretch past the 350 games of waiting after their humiliating exit from the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

Chiefs were elbowed out by second tier league bottom half club Milford to leave them having to deal with the disappointment of ending their ninth consecutive season empty handed.

AmaKhosi will complete the rest of the league campaign, playing for second place at best with Mamelodi Sundowns already champions in waiting for their seventh consecutive league title.

A breakdown of Chiefs’ issues show that since lifting their last trophy in May 2015, they have now endured 340 matches in all competitions with nothing to show on the silverware front.

Counting from Steve Komphela’s first game in charge of August 4, 2015, against Maritzburg United in the MTN8, the penalty defeat to Milford was game number 340 of zero returns with regards to trophies.

With another 13 league games to play this season, it means Chiefs will surpass 350 games and possibly reach the 400 mark if they don’t win any trophy next season.

Chiefs will reach nine years without any trophies won in May – which is the longest that they have ever had to wait for silverware.

Nine years is also the longest that any of the Big Three clubs has ever had to wait before lifting a trophy.

Seven coaches – Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki, and Cavin Johnson, have failed the silverware test at Chiefs for a combined 33 trophy attempts.

Chiefs have come short in the league eight times, then MTN8 (eight times), Telkom KnockOut (five times), Nedbank Cup (nine times), CAF Champions League (twice), and the CAF Confederation Cup.

The next possible trophy route for Chiefs is next season’s MTN8 but for that to happen they must first finish in the top eight.

By then, there might be no-one in the Chiefs squad who has previously won a trophy, with Itumeleng Khune set to exit from his playing duties at the club.
