Head coach Cavin Johnson was full of praise for rising star Mduduzi Shabalala, who scored the winner as Kaizer Chiefs defeated SuperSport United.

Amakhosi broke a five-match winless run when they defeated Matsatsantsa 2-1 at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Christian Saile opened the scoring for Chiefs, before Terrence Dzvukamanja levelled matters from the penalty spot.

Shabalala came up with a moment of magic late in the match when he volleyed a shot from the edge of the box that took an awkward bounce to beat SuperSport goalkeeper Arubi Washington and earn the Soweto giants their first three points since March.

Speaking to media after the match, Johnson provided his verdict on the 20-year-old’s performance.

"Look, Shabba (Shabalala) has been on the fringes for a while," Johnson said.

"He’s been in and out. When I started, he played a few games and now he’s come in and out.

"The last game he came in and he played probably 70 minutes. But he’s always been there. He’s always been a quality player. He’s always been someone that is fighting to be in the team.

"Tonight he scores a goal. It’s like any other player in his position; what makes them better is when they score goals.

"So, I think he did very well tonight."

It was a first goal of the season for Shabalala in his 16 appearances.

Chiefs are next in action in a titanic encounter with run-away log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, to be played on Thursday at FNB Stadium.
