Champions in waiting Mamelodi Sundowns have left the conclusion of the DStv Premiership hanging in doubt.
Champions in waiting Mamelodi Sundowns have left the conclusion of the DStv Premiership hanging in doubt.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ congested fixture schedule has forced the PSL to move two games with another five hanging heading into the last eight weeks of the season.

Sundowns’ league game away at Cape Town Spurs will now be played on April 9 instead of April 6.

Then the home fixture against Richards Bay has been pulled closer by a day to April 2 from April 3.

This is to allow Sundowns to prepare for the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Yanga to be played under the lights at Loftus Versfeld on April 5 (20h00).

April 16 has been set aside for the trip to Dobsonville to play Moroka Swallows after which Sundowns will still have another nine league games to play.

The PSL has also provisionally kept the weekends of April 19/20 and April 26/27 without domestic fixtures for The Brazilians in anticipation of that they will play in the semi-finals of the Champions League on those dates.

If Sundowns play in the Champions League semi-finals, then their league match against Sekhukhune United on April 27 will have to be squeezed in to April 23.

April 23 falls in between the first and second legs of the Champions League semifinals to be played against either ASEC Mimosa or Esperance if they go through.

From there Sundowns will travel to Kaizer Chiefs on April 30 before back-to-back games against Royal AM on May 7 and May 11.

There will still be five league games to play for Sundowns by then and how they will be fitted into the programme remains hanging.

This is due to that a bigger challenge remains in store for the PSL if Sundowns reach the final of the Champions League.

CAF has set aside May 18 and May 25 for the decider, which are dates that the PSL had set aside for the last two rounds of the league with all 16 teams playing on the same day and kick-off times.

It could even get more complicated if Sundowns also reach the Nedbank Cup final set for June 1.

Sundowns are in the last eight of the Nedbank and will play University of Pretoria on April 12 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

If they go through, then May 4/5 is booked for the semi-finals.

The next FIFA calendar week is from June 3-11.

Should Sundowns reach the finals of both the Champions League and Nedbank Cup then they will have five league games pending which will then have ripple effects on the league.
