Maritzburg United gave their survival hopes a massive boost after defeating TS Galaxy 2-1 on Sunday evening.

There were no changes from the Rockets on the back of their 4-0 victory over Richards Bay FC, while the struggling Maritzburg gave a start to King Ndlovu in poles as Renaldo Leaner dropped to the bench.

Two minutes was all it took for United to go ahead when Jose Ali Meza latched onto the end of a delivery from Friday Samu and sold one challenge to rifle in the bottom-corner from outside the area.

Galaxy started to throw numbers forward afterwards and threatened the leveller with a loose shot by Bernard Parker from a tight angle, but he hit the side-netting.

Parker pushed up again at the midway phase and levelled when he dragged a ball from point-blank range in off a defender and into the net amidst the efforts of goalkeeper King Ndlovu.

The former Kaizer Chiefs man targeted a brace in the space of minutes with a sharp curler from a tight angle in the area, but he hit the upright.

Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids installed a substitution inside the last five minutes of the half where Keegan Ritchie made way for Genino Palace.

Davids’ boys furthermore regained the lead on the stroke of halftime from a spot-kick by Amadou Soukouna on the back of an indiscretion inside the offensive area.

The relegation-haunted side from Pietermaritzburg were eager to hold onto their slender advantage as the second period commenced in the hope of victory.

Galaxy looked to claw their way back having fallen behind again and their response was the bench which had Lindokuhle Mbatha, Mlungisi Mbunjana and Ebraheem Seedat take the field.

There were still moments aplenty for either side to take aim at goal, but neither capitalised and aided the Team of Choice to victory.
