Cape Town City were denied maximum points right at the death as SuperSport United claimed a 1-1 draw in a DStv Premiership clash on Wednesday evening.

Recent signing Khaya Leshabela made his first start for City, while United started Grant Margeman, Siyanda Xulu and Gape Moralo following Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Modern Future FC.

It was a scrappy opening quarter with limited goal-mouth activity, continuous possession turnovers, lack of pressing, and little to no penetration pattern from either side.

SuperSport appeared promising later on particularly on the break through runs in the channels from Shandre Campbell, but he enjoyed little support whenever on the front-foot.

City refreshed the playing personnel five minutes to halftime and introduced Taahir Goedeman in the place of Luyolo Slatsha.

The first telling opening came minutes to halftime through a first-time volley from the area by Thabo Nodada, but Ricardo Goss answered – thus concluded the first half.

City were in the lead five minutes in the second half when Khanyisa Mayo caught Goss flat-footed out of the area and tucked in a well-weighted first-time pass from Goedeman.

Matsatsanta came close to the equaliser from a cross-field ball, but Bradley Grobler and Siphesihle Ndlovu failed to connect before Darren Keet snuffed out Campbell’s follow-up shot.

The Tshwane boys continued to push numbers in the hope of a reply, while City attempted a second and were inches away when Mayo snapped a loose ball wide of the mark.

It continued to be a frustrating evening for Matsatsantsa, as Zimbabwean-born Etiosa Ighodaro nodded wide from a corner after rising the highest in the six-yard area.

SuperSport had a golden chance snuffed out ten minutes to halftime when Keanu Cupido smothered a loose shot from Grobler off the line following a corner.

The Citizens were unable to hold onto the lead though as Matsatsantsa snatched a point in added time through a curling free-kick from Lyle Lakay, and left the spoils shared.

Confirmed line-ups:
