Chippa United co-coach Thabo September has explained the reasons behind his departure from SuperSport United in January.

The former centre-back took the local football fraternity by surprise when he resigned from Matsatsantsa after more than a decade there to link up with the Gqeberha-based outfit.

He had worked at SuperSport as both a player and coach with the DStv Diski Challenge team. The former Bush Bucks man is currently working with Kwanele Kopo as co-coaches at the Chilli Boys.

September is now hoping to grow as a coach in his current role, and has also taken the opportunity to explain why he made the sudden jump.

“It was difficult to leave SuperSport. A lot of emotional things involved, but I had to decide for the career and also for the family to be closer my parents as they are 74 years old. So, when I am in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), I am two hours away,” September told KickOff.

“Staying in one place, sometimes you don’t grow. So, I took this as a place to grow in the career that I want to be good at. One of the best coaches in the country, Rulani (Mokwena), worked at Chippa, so Chippa gives opportunities to coaches to help yourself in your career. Hence, I saw an opportunity to grow and I took it,” he added.

Since their appointment as co-coaches, September and Kopo have taken charge of five matches in all competitions, winning two, drawing two and losing one, the latter to defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chippa are set to host Ravens in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 match at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium in East London on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15:00.
