Pietermaritzburg-born former striker Sandile "AK-47" Ndlovu says expecting the current Maritzburg United side to cause an upset this weekend is a far-fetched dream.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship side has a mountain to climb in their Last 16 Nedbank Cup clash as they take on serial winners Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Sunday encounter takes place at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

"Maritzburg United has changed a lot, nowadays they play with youngsters who happen to be Sundowns fans," Ndlovu tells KickOff.

"That's what is going to be their downfall, their players are big admirers of ‘Mshishi’. And even in the league, they are not doing well. Yes, they will push because they will be looking to sell themselves, but lack of experience will let them down.

"Sundowns are not the number one team in South Africa by fluke, so I don't see Maritzburg United causing an upset here, I don't wanna lie. Their players are too inexperienced, first of all. I expect them to be star-struck.

"If teams in the DStv Premiership find it difficult to beat a star-studded team like Sundowns, then they will be too much for Maritzburg.

"They are only going there to honour the fixture. I don’t give them much of a chance on Sunday. I will not waste time and say this is football and anything can happen, no. Maritzburg is going to lose, that's all.

"I love Maritzburg, they are my home team, but there's still a lot to be done for them to get back to where they were before."

The Team of Choice qualified for this stage of the competition after their 3-0 win over amateur side Paarl United.
