Clinton Larsen has moved within a stone’s throw of negotiating his way back into the DStv Premiership after four years of toiling in the lower divisions.

Larsen last coached in the top league back in 2020 when he was with Polokwane City.

Prior to that, he had established himself in the PSL for a decade working at Bloemfontein Celtic, Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows and Chippa United.

Since his last DStv Premiership gig at Polokwane, Larsen then went for almost a year without a job, before settling for third-tier league at Summerfield Dynamos, where he spent 18 months.

The former Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates midfielder then took over at Motsepe Foundation Championship club Magesi in January 2023.

Larsen took Magesi – who are based in Polokwane – to the end of last season as they finished in the bottom half.

Into the new season, the 53-year-old has worked his way to influence at the club and is now leading the First Division standings (45 points) with seven games left to play.

The prime target is automatic promotion, which will come with finishing top of the standings and increase the value of the modest club to the region of R45 million from an estimation of R12 million.

There will also be the benefit of a vast increase in the grant from the PSL.

Magesi have won seven games in a row to move up to the top of the First Division standings, with Elvis Chipezeze carrying the load from the back.

Second-placed University of Pretoria (44 points) also have interests in finishing top and getting the automatic promotion ticket.

Meanwhile, Marumo Gallants are now facing the prospect of consecutive relegation.

Gallants went down from the DStv Premiership last season and now sit bottom of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings.
