Captain Ronwen Williams has come to the defence of head coach Hugo Broos after Bafana Bafana’s recent shock draw against Andorra.

Bafana will be looking to for an improved performance when they take on The Desert Eagles on Tuesday after an embarrassing 1-1 draw against lowly ranked Andorra last Thursday.

Broos has since come under some criticism for selecting a relatively new line-up that included first national caps for Patrick Maswangwanyi, Tapelo Xoki and Mlondi Mbanjwa.

However, Williams has come to the defence of the Belgian mentor.

"We were disappointed as a team, we felt they were there for the taking, we created so many chances but in saying that it was a completely different team to the one we’ve had for the past two years,” Williams told SAFA media.

"There’s been so many new players, players that have also come back into the team, so it was a completely new team and for us, the main thing was we didn’t lose the game.

"Yes, we are disappointed that we didn’t win. We wanted to win.

"Coach (Broos) said he was obviously giving new players a chance to showcase their talent, so they can put their hand up but the most important thing is to win. So that was the only disappointment we’ll take from the game – that we didn’t win.

"We felt we were strong enough to win, we created so many chances, but once again, it’s one of those games where the coach had his reasons for his approach of giving a lot of players (a chance) to play. So, we don’t need to look too much into that game.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday) is a big one, we are playing the host nation. We know they come off a very bad AFCON.

"They just got a new coach (Vladmir Petkovic) and that can be very dangerous as players want to put their hand up, they want to be counted.

"So, we’ve trained accordingly, we’re ready. We want to show why we finished third at AFCON and want consistency in our performances.”

Bafana’s match against Algeria is scheduled to kick off at 23:00.
