SAFA president Danny Jordaan believes that he was misunderstood when talking about Bafana Bafana's supposed all or nothing $7 million (R131 million) AFCON bonus deal.

SAFA announced on Sunday that they have reached an agreement with the Bafana players on the payment structure and bonuses for their participation at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the players, led by captain Ronwen Williams, Percy Tau, Siyanda Xulu, Veli Mothwa and Themba Zwane  were seen smiling and taking pictures signing the memorandum of agreement.

In a video sent by SAFA media, Jordaan made a statement "if they win they get seven million, if they lose they get nothing", which was translated to mean that's the terms of their deal with the Bafana players.

However, Jordaan has clarified the matter and says he was merely quoting the $7 million AFCON winners prize money which was announced by CAF and that his statement had nothing to do with their agreement with Bafana players.

"Because of the problems we had with the women's team, some of the women stopped playing because of how they were harassed, because we were writing in the papers about money they were going to get. So we cannot be irresponsible and put money in the papers," Jordaan said on Radio 2000's Game On.

"You must understand that many of our players still live in the townships, and aren't people going to knock on their houses and say, 'No you have money, we know you have money, we saw in the papers'. We are not going to be part of that discussion

"All we're going to say is we've concluded the deal, the players are happy. If they want to tell you how much is in their contracts it's up to them but from a SAFA's point of view, we're definitely not going to talk about money," he said.

When pressed on his statement about $7 million or nothing, Jordaan said: "I did not say a word. That is what CAF has issued. That was the decision from CAF and we said this is what CAF is offering," he concluded.

In the 2019 AFCON, Bafana reportedly had a deal for each player to get R320 000 for reaching the last 16, R520, 000 for qualifying for the quarter-finals, R670, 000 for reaching the semi-finals and R920, 000 for winning the tournament.

The AFCON winners prize was $4,5 million (R83 million) and has since increased to $7 million (R130 million).

Bafana did not qualify for the 2021 continental showpiece, where the winners prize money was $5 million (R93 million).
