'This is football, it’s not rugby' - Former referee issues verdict on Du Preez penalty

Renowned former referee Victor Hlungwani has provided his assessment of a penalty awarded to Ashley du Preez during Carling All-Stars’ win over Stellenbosch on Saturday.

The Carling All-Stars walked away registered a 2-1 win over Stellies thanks to an early free-kick by Mfundo Vilakazi before Du Preez sealed the victory with a second from a spot kick just minutes after.

Du Preez had been awarded the penalty after Thabo Moloisane was adjudged to have fouled him in the penalty box after  a great solo run by the speedy attacker.

The incident has sparked debated on social media and speaking to SABC Sport, Hlungwani confirmed that All-Stars indeed deserved the penalty.

"Here we see a hand, pushing here, this is football, it’s not rugby. In rugby this is allowed but in football, cannot push an opponent There is an extended movement of a push, on the face as well [of du Preez] so when he pushes him on the face, [that is a penalty. Correct decision by the referee to give a penalty.

The goal will come a confidence booster the Du Preez, who has missed out on a large part of the season due to injury and has feature just twice for Amakhosi since his return from a three-month long injury layout.

Du Preez has scored three goals and provided two assists for Chiefs this season.
