Head coach Hugo Broos insists there is still a lot more to do following Bafana Bafana’s bronze medal finish at the AFCON 2023.

South Africa scooped three accolades at the AFCON in the form of the Fair Play award, a bronze medal and Ronwen Williams' Golden Glove but could progress no further than the semi-final following a 4-2 defeat to Nigeria in penalties.

Speaking at the post-match press conference after Bafana’s 5-4 win over DR Congo in the third place play-off, Broos shed some light on some of the areas he intends to address within the Bafana team.

"This was for me a very good experience when I came to South Africa," Broos said.

"When we tried, we did it and qualified for AFCON, I knew what I had to tell the players. I knew what I could expect.

"Also, in the previous months, we looked for players who could play a game that was not a South African type of game. Sometimes a little bit of power, vertical passes and I think we found them.

"But now with this third place (bronze medal), we don’t have to think now everything is okay, there is still a lot of work to do. but I think the basic is there, everyone knows now that when they play for the national team, what we expect from a player, is the good mentality, and we show it.

"If you can play all those games like my team did then you have the right mentality so again the basic is there now. The players are there now, even though we still have to go and work on it and try to progress with the team.

"But yes, we are two steps further than two years ago and I think this is very important.
