In what was a rare occurrence in South African football, a violent fight broke out on the field between players during a Hollywoodbets Super League clash between Royal AM and Lindelani Ladies on Sunday.

The story

The KwaZulu-Natal derby descended into chaos as huge brawl erupted during the match between the two local teams. The incident took place late in the match, with Royal AM leading 2-1.

A Royal AM player was swarmed by a group of angry Lindelani stars before one of them decided to hit the Thwihli Thwahla player. Just a second later, the Royal AM footballer retaliated by swinging her arms at all the Lindelani players who were in front of her.

Both benches were seen racing onto the pitch, while some of the players who were warming up also joined in on the fight, sparking a full brawl taking place. Some players did, however, try and stop the fight and ease tensions between the two sides.

The matched ended with the 2-1 scoreline and five red cards were issued.

SAFA has since condemned these violent actions and issued a statement on their official website, which read: "The South African Football Association is disappointed by the violence displayed by players during the Hollywoodbets Super League match between Royal AM and Lindelani Ladies at the Princess Magogo Stadium, in KwaMashu.

"What was meant to be an entertaining KZN derby in women’s football, turned out to put the integrity of the women’s game in disarray.

"SAFA has received the Match Commissioners report following the incident caught live on SABC 1.

"The Referees report will also be studied before the two teams are called into a Disciplinary hearing. This after a fight broke out on the pitch and forced the Referee to give 5 red cards in the dying minutes of the game."
