Kaizer Chiefs star Happy Mashiane is often spotted rocking a rather unusual-looking pair of Nike sandals and the story behind it all is quite interesting. Here's a look!
The story
Perhaps a few years ago, many would have imagined Mashiane being in a much better position than the one he currently finds himself now.
The versatile star broke onto the scene in 2019 after impressing in the Multichoice Diski Challenge for the Amakhosi reserves and expectations were quite high for the player to go on and make a big impact in the first team. The 25-year-old has shown glimpses of his talent in his first full season in the DStv Premiership in 2020/21, where he made 18 league appearances for the Naturena outfit.
However, things have not gone according since then, with the Tembisa-born attacker not making more than seven league appearances in the seasons that followed. While injuries are also to blame of his glaring inconsistency, Mashiane has remained an interesting character in the Chiefs squad although it is sometimes for how cool he is off the pitch.

Stylish is surely one of the ways one could characterize the left-footed baller, as he is never caught slipping in the style department. He boasts a fresh sense of fashion, which often comprise edgy streetwear looks. His style is happy, colourful, and comfortable, and he sometimes surprises his avid followers with some of his wardrobe choices.
One, in particular, are his white Nike Air Rift Breathe shoes. These split-toe sandals debuted in 1996 and their release was poorly received due to their separated big-toe and chunky sole, according to the New York Times. Many still think they are unusual to look at but given how nuanced and abstract fashion is nowadays, Mashiane has drawn an appeal to the sandals.
He continues to style them quite well, as he wears them with various types of trousers, including cargo and sweatpants. It won't be a surprise if many are influenced by his liking for the Air Rift. His liking for the Swoosh brand also makes sense given it is his preferred boot brand.
