Similar to Mama Joy Chauke’s decision to leave Orlando Pirates in favour of Royal AM a few years ago, another football super fan has now dumped Bloemfontein Celtic to join Mamelodi Sundowns. Here's a look.

The story

In 2021, Mama Joy shocked many in the football fraternity, as she ditched Pirates to become the leading face of Shauwn Mkhize’s team. The move put an end to her 30-year-old association with the Soweto giants, according to IOL, with the Limpopo native indicating that she had attended all but one of the Buccaneers’ home games in the 20 years prior.

Just three years later, it now appears that yet another familiar face to South African football audiences is changing allegiance.

Mamello Makha, a former diehard Siwelele and Bafana Bafana supporter, has now confirmed she is joining Sundowns. The passionate supporter confirmed the decision on her social media platforms on Tuesday, whilst dressed up in her new club colours of yellow.

“I have mourned and cried for a team whose status was sold. To me, it’s like getting married to someone and then getting divorced," she said in a video posted on her Instagram.

“It has been four seasons without a team. As someone who loves sport, I don’t have any entertainment besides being myself at the stadium and rallying behind our soccer players and athletes in other sporting codes.

“As a super fan, I had to choose one out of 16 PSL teams, which is Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I am so excited. Management welcomed me…Ntate Motsepe, and everyone around the team.”
