There is a colloquial saying in South Africa that says: “you rest, you rust” and it appears that Kaizer Chiefs star Itumeleng Khune is steering as far away as possible from complacency in 2022.

Having struggled with injuries and fitness over the last two years, veteran goalkeeper Khune seems to be beginning the new year on a positive note as he has already begun doing the hard yards in the gym.

New year, new opportunities

Every year presents new opportunities and with Khune having dropped down the pecking order in Stuart Baxter’s side, the experienced shot-stopper now has a real shot at reclaiming his number one spot.

Current number one Daniel Akpeyi is set to miss all club action while he is at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon representing Ghana.

Chiefs will resume their season later this month as they will compete in the inaugural DStv Compact Cup, which is set to take place over the last two weekends of January 2022.

Now, with the former Bafana Bafana captain showing how focused he has been about getting into excellent shape ahead of the restart, he seems determined to outwit even Bruce Bvuma in his widely contested position.

Did you know?

The start of the 2021/22 season saw the Ventersdorp-born goalie equal Patrick 'Ace' Ntsoelengoe's record of being the longest-serving player in the history of Amakhosi.

Your thoughts, please?

Among the Soweto giants’ greatest players of all-time, where would you rank Khune?
